Media Invite: The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown movie at Din Tai Fung @ 112 Katong Mall

Honoured to be invited to a food tasting at Din Tai Fung last week.

Met Tosh and Wei Liang, the two artists who stared in The Lion Men as well.

As Din Tai Fung is the title sponsor for Jack Neo’s latest movie The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown, thus, Wei Liang and Tosh Zhang, were invited for a meet-and-greet session at Din Tai Fung, where they will also demonstrate the art of making Xiao Long Bao from the Shi Fu.

So while we, the bloggers, got entertained by Tosh Zhang and Wei Liang (they were really fun people and easy going!), we were also served with some of the signature dishes by Din Tai Fung.

Oriental Salad in Special Vinegar Dressing (小菜), $4.

A simple and refreshing chilled starter comprising a mix of julienned seaweed, bean sprouts, chilli, beancurd strips and rice vermicelli tossed in an appetizing light tangy dressing.

One of the all-time-favourite by fans of Din Tai Fung. It was very refreshing indeed and the special vinegar dressing spurs up my appetite certainly for the upcoming dishes. :D Definitely makes a great appetizer. ^^

Red Dates with Glutinous Rice (红枣圆), $4.80.

Enjoy a healthy and light starter with these fragrant red dates that are generously filled with steamed glutinous rice fillings.

If you're a dates and glutinous rice fan, you gonna love this. Personally I do. As the mochi (glutinous rice) added extra bites to the simple red dates!

Fragrant Pork with Crushed Garlic (蒜泥白肉), $7.30.

A delightful cold dish consisting of crunchy cucumbers encased in thin layers of succulent poached pork and steeped in a fragrant garlic sauce with sesame and green onions.

Another popular dish at Din Tai Fung. I'm not a fan of poached pork as I'm afraid that it would smells. But this doesn't! Must be the perfect match of garlic with it. Yums!

Steamed Pork Dumplings (小笼包), 10 pcs $9.80 / 6pcs $7.30.

A signature dish of minced premium pork enveloped in a delicate dumpling skin. Each Xiao Long Bao is skilfully handmade with precision and showcases a minimum of 18 exquisite folds.

Nobody, comes to Din Tai Fung without ordering their frame Xiao Long Bao. The xlbs are not just neatly folded with 18 exquisite folds, even the filling and skin has to be weighed to exact. This is how much pride Din Tai Fung has for their Signature Xiao Long Bao.

Only with the right proportional of meat and fats as well as their flavourful stock, can you get such yummy xiao long bao.

Hot & Sour Soup (酸辣汤), $6.00 (Small) / $8.00 (Regular).

Striking a perfect balance of spice and tang, the Hot & Sour Soup which contains mushrooms, beancurd strips, bamboo shoots and black fungus seeks to warm the belly with its comforting flavours.

I like how the soup is not overly starchy like how some places do it. This was just good.

Stir-fried Dou Miao with Garlic (蒜炒豆苗), $12.

A deceptively modest dish made with only premium young, tender shoots. Every batch of specially selected vegetables is almost identical in length and quality, and is trimmed with precision before being tossed in the wok with just a teaspoon of sunflower oil, bringing out the natural sweetness of the vegetables.

If you're looking for something really homey, this would be the one.

Crispy Golden Prawn Pancake (酥脆腐皮虾饼), $9.30.

Consisting of fresh prawns wrapped in a delicate layer of bean curd skin and deep-fried to perfection, the Crispy Golden Prawn Pancake makes a scrumptious side dish that will leave one coming back for more.

I definitely had more than one of this. It doesn't leave a greasy after taste, which is very important for deep-fried food. I also like how I could taste the juiciness of the prawns!

Fried Rice with Shredded Pork & Eggs (肉丝蛋饭), $9.80.

A classic dish comprising simple ingredients such as rice, shrimps, eggs and spring onions. Every grain of the premium Taiwan pearl rice is coated with egg and stir-fried with minimal seasoning so that the natural fragrance of the eggs and spring onions shine through.

Besides, xiao long bao, Din Tai Fung's fried rice is certainly another must-order on every table. Do you know that in order to ensure that every grain is coasted with egg, at any point in time only 3 plates of fried rice are being made in the kitchen. Such specificity to serve only the best to all diners.

Steamed Red Bean Dumplings with Chocolate Lava (巧克力豆沙小笼包), $10.00 (10pcs) / $7.30 (6 pcs).

For a sweet finish, bite into the thin dumpling skin and savour a divine pairing of luscious chocolate and premium Taiwan red bean paste filling.

Something that I have always wanted to try! Glad I'm not disappointed too. Love the twist in this dumpling. When you first bite in, it's the taste of warm red bean in our mouth. As you bite more, chocolate lava starts to ooze from within. Such a winning combination.

Ended the tasting with the two stars. :)

Also, good news to all fans of Din Tai Fung. Their annual Chilli Crab Xiao Long Bao promotion is back! This is one of my favourite dish and it is 40% larger than Din Tai Fung’s signature Steamed Pork Dumplings! Catch it while the promotion is still on! :)
